Alex Katz ist am 24. Juli 1927 im New Yorker Stadtteil Brooklyn geboren, studierte Katz an der Cooper Union in New York und der Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine. Katz hat seinen Wohnsitz in New York, kehrt aber jeden Sommer nach Maine zurück, um die Küsten- und Waldregionen dieses nordöstlichen Bundestaates zu malen.

Alex Katz ist ein amerikanischer Künstler, der für großformatige Gemälde mit häufig monochromem Hintergrund bekannt ist. Er malt Landschaften und Porträts, wobei ihm häufig seine Ehefrau Ada Modell steht. Seine Markenzeichen sind glatt aufgetragene Farben und „Flachheit“, eine konsequente Zweidimensionalität der Gemälde. Katz begann seine Karriere in einer Zeit, die vom abstrakten Expressionismus dominiert wurde und sah sich im Wettbewerb mit diesem Stil. „Als Künstler konkurrieren wir um Publikum. Ich konkurriere mit den abstrakten Expressionisten. Ich werde sie von der Wand fegen. Und ich will mich mit dem Nachwuchs messen“, sagt Katz. Die Arbeiten von Katz gingen der Pop Art voraus. Heute ist er als vielleicht der letzte Lebende der großen Pop Art Künstler der ersten Generation, zu der sich auch Andy Warhol und Jasper Johns zählen lassen. Seine Arbeiten sind in unzähligen hochkarätigen Museums- und Privatsammlungen vertreten. Katz hat zur Zeit Retrospektiven in den wichtigsten Häusern der internationalen Museumslandschaft.
