DANIEL SPOERRI
born 1930 in Romania
The long and fluxus career of Daniel Spoerri is famously or perhaps infamously governed by decomposition. His followers were initially disconcerted when, at the age of 60, he began putting things back together again. But since he reached the age of 65 the last doubter has been convinced that in doing so he is merely following all other realms of human activity and subscribing to the circulatory system. The background for his work with pages known as "Le Cabinet Anatomique" dates back to original copper engravings from the 19th century for Diderot's "Anatomie de l'Homme". The vast majority of these pages were found in flea-markets, where Spoerri initially started buying one of them after another - until the antique dealers themselves started to look around for more reproductions. Since the copper engravings are in a small format, Spoerri was obliged to restrict himself to smaller objects in his collages.
Spoerri's object assemblies of bones or wounds are not at all intended to be a mockery. On the contrary, they are evidence of an attempt to make sickness and suffering more clear and more accessible. Spoerri never intended his works to embody messagesor instruction, and in these new works he is aiming for the greatest possible integration, conjuring up human destiny.
