There are artists with a sense of humor, their works surprise by phantasy and a fresh look. Furthermore: if their subject matter is the nude body, who does not like to look at a beautifully painted nude? But can you hang it in the living room? Markus Lörwald's answer takes another turn: Magdalena's Laundry is not only about a nude, but as well about laundry.

This is a trap. Nobody will blame you, if you hang Lörwald's works in your living room, because his nudes are of high esthetical quality. If you look at his works, they are enjoyable, make you think of the beautifully painted nudes in art history, while at the same time you can just reflect upon their painterly quality, harmonious colours and fine talent for drawing. Eros in its figurative sense represented as a nude, eros in its abstract sence, representing beauty.

It is obvious that in Lörwald's works eros is nothing to do with pornography or the politically correct demand for protection of abuse of the body. All you need to do is look at the works and to be not scared that they could be misplaced in the living room. Just imagine Schiele's drawings of nudes next to Lörwald's, that are beautiful, as radical as Schiele attacked the subjet matter. And forget another argument in contemporary art discussions: is beauty a theme, don't we have other problems?

Beauty in Lörwald's paintings differs from the beauty of Vogue models .As in the grand tradition of nude painting they conjure up a testomony of beauty as fateful and contrary to death. To form an image of beauty and eros it is necessary to go behind the screen, where to explore thoughts that include a carpe diem or a memento mori. In these works de Sade and Schiele, Bataille and Balthus have shaped the contemporary image and prevented the old one to fade. Beauty as a head of Janus, as a world of ideas with abstract and figurative lines are the central themes to think about.
