Rainer Fetting lives and works in Berlin and New York
Rainer Fetting comes to Berlin in 1972 and in 1977 he joins the artists at the Moritzplatz, a self-help gallery which is soon to cause a furore by creating a new city culture, the gallery members are henceforth called »New Wilds«. The powerful and completely free Berlin nightlife and the confrontation with Berlin traditions in painting are to be decisive in the activities of the artists at Moritzplatz.
There is a similar mood of escape in other metropolitan areas than: within a short time Chia, Cuchhi and Clemente in Rome, Schnabel and Salle in New York, Alberola and Garouste in France- all have enthusiastic supports and stage international exhibitions. In the most significant of these exhibitions, »A New Spirit in Painting« (London, 1981) and »Zeitgeist« ( Berlin, 1982), the artistic power of Rainer Fetting is acknowledged, and soon he is shown in international gallleries and museums all over the world.
The themes of Fetting's works stem from observations of city life.The American writer Donald Kuspitt loves the psychological moment they capture, while the Italian writer and philosopher Giovanni Testori discovers a suicidal melancholy in the light which emerges from the paintings. The Berlin images before and after the wall came down embody traces of that radical change and bear witness to the discovery of a landscape that is new to West Berliners- the surrounding area of the Mark Brandenburg. Fetting creates an opposition between relics of curtailed freedom and the wild yellows of rape fields. An echo of this brillant yellow also appears in the New York pictures. A concentration on the bright yellow taxis of the city provides Fetting with room to explore colour and form. He also establishes the motion and speed of the vehicles in graphic terms, conveying the hectic of the chasm-like streets. In contrast to city life and its speed he paints animals, especially pelicans, that he has observed over many years. Another image, the fish, is as well apt to convey movement, light and fragility of the creature.
Rainer Fetting takes the approach of a classical painter when in every painting anew he gives his own example of the multifaceted forms of painting in the 20th century. As he is a very talented painter, this approach allows him to constantly set himself new goals and to achieve new forms of painting.
